My first offshore fishing adventure was over 20 years ago. I had just purchased an offshore battle wagon—a well-worn old sportfishing boat. Looking back, it probably wasn’t wise for a few inexperienced friends and me to take it 100 miles offshore to the canyons in search of bluefin, yellowfin, or bigeye tuna. We were new to the game but eager to learn, often gathering advice from the seasoned “old salts” and seafarers around the docks.

About The Author

Captain Ron Smith

My journey to writing this book began with a deep and lifelong love of the sea. In 1976, at the age of 13, my family moved from Western Massachusetts to Narragansett, Rhode Island, so my father could take over my grandfather’s cobbler business. That move changed my life. I was instantly drawn to the ocean and spent nearly every sunny day at the beach, playing in the waves, learning to boogie board, and attempting to surf— though I never quite mastered it.

Around that time, I met my close friend Dean, who lived just two streets away. We both shared a passion for the water. Dean introduced me to boating; his father, an old “Swamp Yankee” fisherman, allowed us to take his boat out before school. We’d scallop in the mornings, shuck them after school, and sell them to local restaurants by dinner. We also went clamming, water skiing, and spent countless hours on the boat whenever we weren’t in school. Not long after, I bought my first boat, a Boston Whaler.

About Book

Call Of The Sea

This book is a collection of personal adventures and nautical escapades that have shaped who I am today. Within its pages, you’ll journey with me through long-distance voyages—some stretching over 1,300 nautical miles—and smaller, quieter moments like rowing a simple boat. No matter the vessel or distance, I lose myself in the water and the world around it whenever I’m near or in the sea.

My wife plays an important role in this story. She has always been either my compass when I needed direction or my anchor when I needed grounding. Her steady presence is woven throughout these stories.
